Why the Earth is Sick When We Are Numb: Ancient Teachings on the Body as a Microcosm of the Planet

Why the Earth is Sick When We Are Numb

There’s a deeper story behind today’s rising anxiety, depression, chronic illness, burnout, and environmental destruction a story that begins not only in society or systems, but in the body. And it’s one many of us intuitively feel but have been conditioned to forget.

The Earth is not simply “sick.” She is holding the sickness we, as a human family, have avoided. And what we call climate collapse, biodiversity loss, or ecological crisis is inseparable from a collective emotional collapse a collapse of connection, sensation, and responsibility. We didn’t just poison the rivers and strip the forests. We disconnected from the soil of our own nervous systems, the waters of our emotional life, and the breath that once carried us into deeper alignment with creation.

In the rush of modern life, we’ve glorified performance over presence. We’ve built systems that reward speed, strategy, and self-optimization, while calling grief “weakness,” stillness “laziness,” and deep care “too much.” But in the ancient traditions Indigenous, Eastern, African, and beyond our bodies were never seen as separate from the planet. Our breath was not mechanical. It was sacred. Our bodies were microcosms of the macrocosm, woven from the same elements, governed by the same rhythms.

In the Andean Cosmovision, for instance, illness is not just a dysfunction in the body it is an imbalance in our relationship with the Earth, with Pachamama. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, every organ is connected to an element and emotion. The liver holds anger. The lungs hold grief. The Earth element, represented by the spleen and stomach, governs nourishment, not just of food but of connection. In Himalayan Tantra, the body is a sacred map, animated by breath and made of the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. When one element is suppressed, the entire system begins to lose harmony. These ancient sciences were not poetic metaphors. They were energetic blueprints of health, life, and regeneration.

But today, what do we see? Suppressed anger. Ignored grief. Systems of life built on extraction, domination, and disconnection. We are encouraged to look successful while secretly disembodied, to function while depleted, to lead while numb. And this disconnection is not just happening to us as individuals. It’s systemic. It’s inherited. And it is deeply spiritual. Because when we are disconnected from our bodies, we become disconnected from the Earth, from the animal world, from each other, and ultimately from any sense of sacred belonging.

Modern neuroscience is finally beginning to catch up. Research shows that over 80% of the communication between the body and the brain travels from the body up not the other way around. This means your perception of life, your thoughts, your ability to feel empathy, to make decisions, to be present, are all rooted in the state of your nervous system. When that system is operating in chronic fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, it does not matter how much you journal, plan, or visualize your body is still operating from survival. And when we create, lead, or parent from survival, we’re not truly creating. We’re coping.

The Earth is now reflecting this back to us. If the body is braced, the planet is bracing. If the body is depleted, the soil is barren. If the body is overheated, the climate mirrors it. When we ignore our internal signals, we also begin to normalize the collapse around us. It becomes easier to scroll past genocide, to ignore the suffering of animals, to say, “That’s just how the world is now.” But it’s not. This isn’t “just the way it is.” It is the result of a long disconnection from inner knowing, from breath, from ritual, from the Earth as living.

In my work with women, I witness every day how returning to the body creates ripple effects far beyond the individual. When a woman begins to breathe differently, she begins to relate differently. When she softens her nervous system, she softens the hardened ways of surviving. She stops creating from force. She stops outsourcing her worth. She stops participating in cycles that exhaust her and extract from others. She builds something rooted in coherence. And that coherence is what our world is starving for.

But the deeper truth is this: regulation is not the end point. It’s the foundation. We are not doing this work simply to feel better. We’re doing it to become trustworthy vessels for the change we say we want to see. And that means learning how to feel again not just joy, but also grief. Not just love, but also loss. Not just peace, but also power. All of it belongs in a fully alive nervous system.

If your breath is shallow, if your body is holding emotions you never had the space to express, if your creativity feels stuck, or your compassion feels numb, this isn’t your personal failure. It’s a result of living in systems that reward numbing. But that can change. And the invitation isn’t to fix yourself. It’s to return to yourself. To return to your breath. To return to your roots.

And in doing so, you return to the Earth.

Let us remember: your breath is not separate from the winds that shape the deserts. Your heartbeat is not separate from the drumbeat of the Earth’s rhythm. Your nervous system is not separate from the great web of life. To heal the Earth, we must feel again. And to feel, we must begin with the body.

This is not optional. It’s essential.
And it’s sacred.
